Cotoneaster, (pounced ka-tone-ee-aster), is a very hardy evergreen landscape plant often overlooked for bonsai because its natural growth habit produces long straight branches with few small secondary branches and almost no curves. Actually this plant has a lot going for it and makes excellent bonsai.

The naturally small blue-green leaves and small bright red berries in season make us pause and take notice. It is completely adapted to our environment and fairs well in summer heat as well as in winter cold. This variety is insect and disease resistant.

Now for the good part, when we prune, wire and shape the cotoneaster and then prune it frequently again as it grows, it completely looses the leggy stringy look that turned us away in the beginning. The tree shown above has been in training for one year and already it is taking on the desired shape of a wonderful bonsai.

Cotoneaster Workshop is appropriate to all skill levels. Prerequisite – Beginning Bonsai. This class is limited to 7 students.

Don’t forget to bring your bonsai tools to class.
